What To Cover In Your Elevator Pitch

You have most likely heard of an elevator pitch before, but have you ever had to use one? An elevator pitch is a short 30-90 second opportunity to show someone who you are and why they should hire you.

This stemmed from a scenario where you walk onto an elevator with a CEO or Company owner and have the elevator ride up or down to pitch them who you are and why YOU are needed on that team.

We recommend to everyone to jot down your elevator pitch outline and tailor this to be concise, sound and feel like YOU because you are selling yourself!

What you want to be sure to include when speaking are the following items:

  • Introduction - who are you?
  • Hook - why should your audience care?
  • What your interest is specifically to the company and what you bring to the table?
  • How does your audience stay connected and follow up?

Here is an example of the elevator pitch used by our Director of Outcomes when meeting new people.

Example:

Hi! My name is Laney and Iā€™m the Director of Outcomes at V School. I work directly with national hiring partners and recruiters to build out job funnels for our students and keep updated with industry trends. The favorite part of my job is that I get to work directly with students and help change their lives by helping them get into tech. I love processes, collaborating and getting things done! Iā€™d love to help you with your career journey, please reach out to me anytime at info@vschool.io.

A few things to avoid are:

  • Speaking too fast
  • Using technical terms, acronyms and slang
  • Not being focused
  • Not practicing what you will say
  • Being stiff and robotic
  • Not having a business card or LinkedIn take away to stay connected
  • Not saying anything
